From a woman caught up in the horrors of modern dating to an outcast accused of murder – poor Daisy Edgar-Jones can’t catch a break! Currently the talk of the cinematic town for her impressive performance in Mimi Cave’s buzzy horror-thriller Fresh, the Normal People star’s next project is something totally different – an adaptation of Delia Owens’ bestselling 2018 novel Where The Crawdads Sing, the first trailer for which has just arrived. Have a watch below:

Set in 1969 in North Carolina, Edgar-Jones plays protagonist Kya. Left to raise herself after being abandoned by her family, she is ostracised by her community, and dubbed ‘Marsh Girl’ by those that shun her – and when a man she was romantically entangled with ends up dead, she is accused of his murder. A blend of love story, crime thriller and Deep South drama, the film follows Kya through several decades of her life, and the trailer shows her pushing back on the pressure and prejudices from those that would see her punished.

Directed by Olivia Newman, best known for her work on Netflix move First Match, the film also stars Harris Dickinson (recently seen in The King’s Man and The Souvenir Part II), Taylor John Smith and David Strathairn, and is produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine. It will arrive in UK cinemas on 15 July.
