One to file under Hardly Surprising, but Westworld has been renewed by US cable channel HBO for a third season.

While the series – which sees an artificial intelligence uprising at a complicated futuristic theme park – hasn't been one of the highest-rated series for the channel, it does generate plenty of buzz, and sees its audience share rise when factoring in delayed viewership, which explains why it scored an early renewal. And you've got to figure that the executives needed to give producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy enough time to put the third season into production, particularly since the series took a year and a half to make between seasons.

"It’s been an extraordinary pleasure to work with the exceptionally talented Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as their gifted cast and crew," says HBO boss Casey Bloys in a statement. "From the inspired storytelling to the incredible visuals, we are so excited to see where the next chapter will take us."

There is, of course, no date for Season 3 to air yet, but we'd predict 2020 if we go by the time between the first and second seasons.
