It's been a while since we've heard much progress on Westworld co-showrunner Lisa Joy's sci-fi film Reminiscence. That's because she's been hard at work on the show's third season, but she's recruited one of the series' stars, Thandie Newton, to join the movie's cast.

Newton joins Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson in the cast for the film, which is set in a future where the oceans have risen and much of the population of Miami has switched to a nocturnal schedule. This is also a world where people such as Jackman's Nick Bannister – who Joy describes as a "PI of the mind" – uses technology to dig into people's memories in order to help them with problems. When a mysterious woman (Ferguson) arrives in his office seeking help with lost keys, the stage is set for an epic romance, one cut short when she vanishes.

Nick will have to unpack his lover's past to find her, facing danger along the way... We don't yet know how Newton's character will fit into the story (which was also scripted by Joy), but she'll be heading for the shoot in Miami and New Orleans in late October, the schedule set so that Joy can finish up her duties on Westworld before focusing on the film.

Westworld will be back on our screens next year.
