The Peripheral (book logo)

Even as it spends billions (or close to that) on its planned JRR Tolkien/LOTR-adjacent series, Amazon is eyeing other possibilities. And one has quite the pedigree, with Westworld TV creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy teaming up with A Simple Plan writer Scott B. Smith to adapt William Gibson's The Peripheral.

Published in 2014, Gibson's tome is set in the near future and follows a number of storylines, including that of Flynne Fisher, who lives in a world where technology has begun to radically alter society. She discovers a hidden connection to a very different reality, and learns of the dark future for her own.

Smith is writing and executive producing the series, which Amazon is considering as a straight-to-series order. Cube's Vincenzo Natali is attached to produce and direct, with Nolan and Joy as fellow executive producers, presumably juggling this with their main job running Westworld. Like the LOTR project, this sounds like a pricey one, so don't be surprised if your Amazon Prime cost goes up in the future. Truly, the darkest timeline.
