So what do you do when you’ve created one of the most successful – if cult – small New York theatre shows? Why, you knock out a screenplay loosely based on its plot and find a producer itching to make it.
Which explains why Bryan Fogel and Sam Wolfson, the talents behind the off-Broadway sensation Jewtopia (creator/stars Bryan Fogel and Sam Wolfson) have sold the script titled Chris O’Connell and Adam Lipschitz Lose Their Religion. Fogel and Wolfson are sticking around as writers and leads for the film version.
The story focuses on a pair of childhood friends who reunite when they hit their 30s and try to find each other soul mates. Trouble is, they both fall for women of different religions, which causes no end of problems for their families. "Our mothers nearly flipped their lids when they heard that we were taking the concept of Jewtopia to the big screen," Wolfson told The Hollywood Reporter. "Before we created what is now one of the longest-running off-Broadway plays in history, we were just two actors trying to break through in Hollywood, so this film is a huge next step for us."
