When Hollywood gossip maven Liz Smith refuses to call a story anything but a rumour you know that you need a lorry full of salt with which to take it.

So, with that proviso, there are rumblings afoot that The Weinstein Company – and more specifically the brothers – are trying to follow up their Chicago success with another big musical adaptation. They’re apparently after Catherine Zeta-Jones and director Rob Marshall to make a fresh version of Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway hoofer Gypsy.

The story of famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and stage mother Rose has been before the cameras once before in 1962, with Natalie Wood taking the lead and Rosalind Russell as Mama Rose. There is no word, and no rumours yet, on who might take either role in this version.
