This week in news: Halle Berry joins Kingsmen 2, Spidey pops up in the Cap 3 trailer, new look at Game Of Thrones season 6 and J.K. Simmons gets a go on the Bat-Signal.
J.K. Simmons will be Justice League's Commissioner Gordon
Fresh from giving us the heebie-jeebies with Whiplash and winning an Oscar for his troubles, J.K. Simmons has been flat-out with a clutch of projects from voice work (Zootropolis, Kung Fu Panda 3) to a host of live-action films, including a reunion with Damien ‘Whiplash’ Chazelle on La La Land. To that little lot, he’s just added the recurring role of Commissioner Gordon in Warner Bros.’ The Justice League movies. Yes, J. Jonah Jameson is now Commissioner Gordon. Meta, eh?
All men must die! Yes, Game Of Thrones is back, back, back
Whether he’s dead or just pining for the Shivering Sea’s fjords, there wasn’t too much sign of Jon Snow in the new trailer for season six of Game Of Thrones. What it did have plenty of was fighting, battles, violent mayhem and all the stuff we love about HBO’s blockbuster George R.R. Martin adaptation. Will the Faith Militant’s pious grip be loosened? Can Daenerys extricate herself from her nasty predicament? Will Arya ever catch a break? It was all here.
Spidey swings into Captain America: Civil War trailer
An alarming 20-minute gap when the internet threw up absolutely nothing for people to get furious about this week was thankfully ended when the Captain America: Civil War trailer landed. Lo, there was Spidey himself to fill up the rage tanks again. The reaction was split between those who felt that showing Spider-Man in the trailer for a film he’s actually in was a spoiler and those who were unconvinced by his new, more CG-shaded look. There was another, third camp: people who saw a whole lot of superheroes belting the life out of each other and just enjoyed the spectacle. Make up your own mind here.
Kingsman 2 gets Berrylicious
With Julianne Moore already aboard and rumours of Colin Firth’s return, the Kingsman sequel just added more Oscar pedigree with Halle Berry in the casting shakeup. Next to nothing is known about this one – although keep an eye on the new issue of Empire - except that it’ll follow Gary "Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton) as he battles evil forces and wears very smart clobber. Matthew Vaughn has a June 16, 2017 release date penciled in for this one so expect more news soon.
Is Daisy Ridley the new Tomb Raider?
If you pass a Hollywood boardroom and see Daisy Ridley puffing a cigar and looking inscrutable she’s probably deep in negotiations with Warner Bros. and MGM to play Lara Croft in a new video-game reboot. The actress is rumoured to be in talks to springboard her role as Rey in Star Wars into a whole new franchise. According to Deadline, “conversations have taken place” between her reps and the studios, conversations that may or may not have involved words like 'Spandex' and 'monkey gargoyles'.
