Who says size matters? Well, apart from Empire’s ex-girlfriends…
Just ask Tom Thumb if size matters. The legendary hero of English folklore, who’s no bigger than, well, a thumb, is about to get the big-screen treatment in a Warner Bros. movie to be directed by Enchanted’s Kevin Lima.
Thumb, as the movie will be known, will be primarily live-action, although Tom himself may well be CG, in the event that Tom Cruise is unavailable. Boom boom etc. etc.
Traditionally, Tom is born to a childless couple who help out Merlin the Magician; in return, the perverse bugger grants them a son who could get squished while being breastfed. But Tom soon overcomes his diminutive stature to become a true hero.
The movie version will place the emphasis on comedy adventure as screenwriter Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) re-imagines Tom as a knight who is magically reduced in size, and has to become a true hero.
Shrinking comedies are all the rage these days, with this, Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man and an Eddie Murphy remake of The Incredible Shrinking Man all in various stages of development. It looks like Thumb could be the first one out of the blocks, though, as Warners has placed it on the fast track in the hopes that the little guy could hit it big.
