In a shocking move for a big studio, Warners has bought up a script based on an original novel, not a comic book or a classic film with remake potential. Amazing, right?
The title in question is Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need Is Kil****l, which comes off sounding similar to Groundhog Day and also Duncan Jones’ currently shooting Source Code (soldier experiences train bombing over and over until he solves it), since it features a raw young trooper recruited to battle an alien species who dies in combat but keeps being reborn every day to suffer the same fate.
Soon enough, he stars becoming a better warrior and learning that other circumstances can be shifted to change the outcome, not just for him but for the whole war.
Writer Dante Harper was brought in by his agents last year to write the script on spec, going through various drafts before presenting it to the studio in almost-ready-to-shoot form. It’ll allow Warners to speed it through production, though of course it’ll need a director, cast and, from the sound of it, one heck of a special effects budget first.
