While it never really caught on over here (beyond its iconic theme tune), cult sitcom Gilligan’s Island was a substantial hit across the pond, where it ran for four years. Now Warners has decided to throw it on the pile of old TV shows waiting to be retooled into big budget films.

For those unfamiliar with the premise – spelled out in that well known opening that you can listen to right here – it followed the castaways from the wrecked SS Minnow, including the titular Gilligan, who were stranded on, you guessed it, an island.

There’s no word on how much of that concept will be translated to the fim, but Arrested Development writer Brad Copeland and Dark Knight producer Charles Roven are in charge of seeing that it makes the journey from script to screen.

Also involved are original TV producer Sherwood Schwartz and his son Lloyd are also involved, aiming to keep it on an even keel. And while no one has been cast, the elder Schwartz is said to be keen on Michael Cera as Gilligan, a role originated by Bob Denver. We doubt that’ll happen, but frankly we’re more concerned that it’s already been successfully remade… as Lost. Come on… Castaways? Wacky adventures on an island? You know it to be true.
