With The Lego Movie doing huge business at the box office, it’s natural that we’re going to see an uptick in studios leaping aboard the toys and games bandwagon to find the next cash cow. Lego studio Warner Bros. clearly wants to make sure it stays ahead of the pack, and has snapped up the rights to the Minecraft video game{ =nofollow}.

The game, which allows you to create and shape an entire world, has sold more than 35 million copies across PCs, the Xbox 360 and mobile platforms. Much like with Lego, the only stories are those created by the various users, who can choose whether to explore, create or fight with each other.

Roy Lee, one of the producers who shepherded Lego to the screen, is aboard to work on this one. He’ll no doubt be looking for a filmmaking team that can work their magic the way Phil Lord and Chris Miller did with Emmett and co. What form the film will take has yet to be decided, though animation would seem to be the sensible way to go. A bigger question might be whether Minecraft will hold its popularity the way the Lego toys have, given how long these films sometimes take on their journey to the screen.
