Though it might not be drawing in quite the same gigantic ratings as its heyday, The Walking Dead and spin-off Fear The Walking Dead are still big earners for US network AMC in terms of both income and attention. So naturally, the company has big plans to keep the zombie cash cow mooing.
As the original series prepares to kick off its ninth season and tackling the challenge of losing lead Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, AMC CEO Josh Sapan has unveiled an ambitious plan to produce new Dead series and potentially movies for at least the next 10 years, with former show-runner turned franchise overseer Scott Gimple driving the efforts.
While the ideas are still at an early stage and nothing is confirmed, there are apparently hopes to spin off several more variations on the show, including examples set in other countries to take advantage of the series' global following. “If we manage it properly it has a long life, which is not to say it will always look like a TV series,” Sapan said at the conference, reported by Bloomberg and picked up by the team at Collider.
Season 9 of the show kicks off on 7 October in the US and 8 October on Fox here. Walking Dead Babies cannot be far off.
