We were somewhat surprised to see Steve McQueen targeting a remake of 1980s Thames TV miniseries Widows as his next potential movie. But we still have faith in his choices, and particularly now since he has Viola Davis as his lead.
McQueen has partnered with New Regency for the film, which he’ll write and produce, adapting Lynda La Plante’s 1983 show. The original series – two more followed in 1985 and then 2002 – was the story of three women who all lose their criminal husbands when the men die in the middle of robbing a security van that catches fire.
They succeed in tracking down the cash for themselves. Until, that is, one of them discovers that her husband didn’t actually die in the incident...
Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn is writing the script, having previously collaborated with the director on a series for HBO that has since been shelved. Davis certainly feels like the right choice to lead this one, particularly after showing her calculating badass side in TV's How To Get Away With Murder and Suicide Squad on the big screen. She'll next be seen in Denzel Washington's August Wilson adaptation Fences, which just released its first trailer.
