Viola Davis kicks arse in pretty much everything she does, but we're really looking forward to seeing her as an actual warrior in The Woman King, from The Old Guard director Gina Prince-Bythewood. In a fitting way kick off Black History month in the US, Davis has shared the first images from the drama.

The film, written by the director and Dana Stevens, is an historical epic inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit, and Nawi (The Underground Railroad's Thuso Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, who together fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.

Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Adrienne Warren, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin are also in the cast for the film, which is scheduled for release on 16 September in the UK and US.
