Though the big J-horror burst that happened a few years ago has lost some momentum, filmmakers are still fascinated with the supernatural elements of Japan. Now directing duo Colin Minihan and Simon Ortiz are planning a new tale of terror in the country called **Temple{
The pair, working collectively under the title The Vicious Brothers, will tackle a script written by Simon Barrett, who is making a rare foray outside of collaborating with director Adam Wingard, with whom he most recently made The Guest.
Temple, which will shoot in Japan, will follow a terrifying ghost story around a fictional religious location in the country, and there are plans to extend the movie’s world with other media. One is a book by Eiji Otsuka of ghostly yarns around various real temples, which will feature the film’s make-believe building and, in a twist, be consulted by the characters during the running time.
Toei Animation, which is stumping up the money to make the film, is also planning a 15-part anime series on the other stories from the book. The Vicious Brothers’ most recent horror thriller was Extraterrestrial, which arrived here last October. They’ll shoot Temple this year. Barrett is part of the team making Wingard’s latest,** The Woods**, which is planned for release next year.
