With a couple of trailers trundling around the web, we've reached the point where the team behind Mortal Engines – including co-writer/producer Peter Jackson and director Christian Rivers – explain more about the world, the story and what went into making the movie. It's all courtesy of a new featurette.

Adapted by LOTR trio Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philipa Boyens from Philip Reeve's novel (the first in a series), Mortal Engines is set thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event. Humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns.

Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London, finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future...

Of course, all involved are happy to ladle positive chatter about the movie, but it really does look like a lot of effort has gone into this one. We'll see what that led to when Mortal Engines opens on 14 December.
