Brad Anderson has proved himself a man able to deliver psychological chills with the likes of Session 9, The Machinist and, to a lesser extent, Transsiberian. Now he’s back with another dark (literally) tale of people haunted by strange events and fighting for their lives in Vanishing on 7th Street.
The film features Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo as a disparate group brought together by the fact that darkness itself seems to be making people disappear into thin air. Soon, the survivors are clinging to what light sources they can find, spurred on by ominous warnings to avoid the dark at any cost and to trust only the light they carry themselves.
This first trailer has a nicely jagged tone (yes, we’re worried about Christensen in anything given some of the performances he’s phoned in over the years, but even he’s on edge here), and the concept’s certainly compelling.
The film doesn’t have a release date either side of the pond yet, but it is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
