The last time Vanessa Kirby appeared in a sci-fi film, it was chaotic, so-bad-it's-fun-but-also-sometimes-just-bad space opera Jupiter Ascending. She'll be hoping for a slightly less mixed reaction to her new trip into the genre, StarDream.
The Wife's Björn Runge is in the director's chair here, working from Felix Harrison's script. It follows the story of a spaceship hastily constructed to transport hundreds of thousands of cryogenically frozen humans from a failing planet Earth. When the on-board computer malfunctions, coder Andreya (Kirby) develops an artificial intelligence-based solution that she calls Stephen. But Stephen develops a profound attachment to Andreya, compromising the mission and the future of the human race.
"To play the leading role in this intergalactic drama needs an extremely sensitive and thoughtful actress who can maintain the balance in her character: I have found that actress in Vanessa Kirby," Runge said in a statement carried by Variety. “It is a tremendous honour for me to work together with her on this film."
StarDream should be shooting this year. Kirby will next show up in more action madness, this time as part of the Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw cast, with the testosterone-fuelled movie crashing on to the screens on 2 August.
