Journey back with us to a far-distant time, when some of you reading this were yet to be born. Yes, the year is 1983 and the movie is Valley Girl, which boasts Nicolas Cage's first lead role, and more leg-warmers/acid-washed denim than is legal these days. Now the film's valley-girl-meets-city-punk concept is back, as a musical and the first trailer is online.

Here's the story: Julie (Happy Death Day's Jessica Rothe, probably happy to not have to dodge masked maniacs and time loops) is the ultimate '80s Valley Girl. That is, until she falls hard for Randy (Josh Whitehouse), a Sunset Strip punk rocker, who challenges everything Julie stand for. Despite push-back from friends and family, Julie must break out of the safety of her world to follow her heart and discover what it really means to be a Valley Girl. Oh, and because it's a musical, the film's loaded with bops from the era, including 'Take On Me', 'Call Me' and 'We Got The Beat'.

Though the usual progression of this sort of thing is movie-stage musical-movie-of-stage-musical, Valley Girl has skipped straight to the third stage. The cast also includes Alicia Silverstone(as the grown version of Julie telling the story to her own daughter), Mae Whitman, Jessie Ennis and Chloe Bennet. Whether Whitehouse can compare to the straggly-haired energy of Cage is a big question, one that the trailer doesn't quite answer.

The film lands on digital in the US (we are in the middle of a pandemic, after all) on 8 May, but there's no official word on a UK date yet.
