It’s been years since Francis Ford Coppola dipped his toe into the bloody horror genre with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but now it would seem that he’s quietly made a return to the field, kicking off work on Twixt Now And Sunrise with Val Kilmer as his lead.
Yes, in a display of sneakiness that seems fitting in the era of sleeper hits and out-of-nowhere movie arrivals, Coppola is keeping to the low-budget DIY aesthetic of his recent work, though we’re sure he’ll be hoping for more box office success this time.
There aren’t a lot of plot details about the film, but Deadline describes it primarily as a thriller with horror overtones and says that Kilmer will be playing a Steven King-esque writer.
Elle Fanning (who has been at work on JJ Abrams equally quiet Super 8) and Bruce Dern (a Coppola veteran from the director’s take on The Great Gatsby) are also in the cast.
The director has based the movie on a short story he penned and is even now calling the shots in Napa. Wonder if he can sneak in a few bottles of his own wine as product placement…
