With Sony and Marvel joining forces to bring another iteration – albeit not an origin story this time – of Spider-Man to our screens, the elements needed to make the movie have been slotting into place. Tom Holland is aboard to play Peter Parker, Jon Watts will direct the film and now it appears the scriptwriters have been found, with John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein in negotiations.

The pair have had a meteoric rise in the last few years, graduating from writing and producing comedies such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and the Horrible Bosses films to co-directing the new Vacation movie. And while not everything they’ve written has been a success, it’s worth noting that several of their drafts were changed before the films hit screens.

There’s a chance that might happen with Spider-Man, as big tentpoles have a notorious habit of churning through script drafts and the writers who create them, but this pair has weathered the development storm on Vacation to get that one made.

As for the new Spider-Man, it’ll find him in high school, already established as the web-slinger and dealing with whatever life – and his various foes – throws at him, with Aunt May (Marisa Tomei has been in talks to take that role) helping out. We’ll get our first glimpse of the new Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, which lands here on April 29 next year, with the still-untitled new Spider-film arriving July 28, 2018. Vacation, meanwhile, arrives in our cinemas on August 21.
