Steven Soderbergh’s non-retirement continues apace, and for his follow-up to Logan Lucky the director has ditched hi-tech equipment. Like Tangerine’s Sean Baker before him, Soderbergh has shot his next project entirely on an iPhone.
The film is Unsane, a psychological thriller that pitches Claire Foy into an entirely different mode than fans of The Crown might expect. Take a look at the film’s poster below.
Shot in just over two weeks, Unsane takes Soderbergh back to his micro-budget Sex, Lies and Videotape roots. “If I’d have had this technology when I was 15, I’d have a very different career,” he told Empire in the latest issue, adding that he still managed to shoot in 4K thanks to the impressive tech now found in smartphones. “You’ve really got to ask yourself the question: how much more [quality] do I need?”
Shooting fast and cheap only added to the film’s sketchy aesthetic and the frayed nerves of Foy’s unhinged (or is she?) character. “It’s designed to be a very visceral, in-your-grill experience,” Soderbergh says.
