Universal has picked up the rights to Skyscraper, a Towering Inferno-style disaster movie that takes place in and around a… you guessed it.

Although this one sounds a lot bigger in scope than The Towering Inferno. The movie will revolve around a Donald Trump-style property developer (or, for Gremlins 2 fans, a Daniel Clamp-style property developer) who tries to build a mile-high skyscraper in Chicago.

But, when things start to go wrong and the tower starts to falter, a rescue crew must swing into action to prevent the city from falling into mayhem.

So, there also appears to be a slight element of 9/11 in this script as well – after all, we all saw the damage and chaos caused by the falling Twin Towers on that terrible day and now, seven years later, Hollywood has finally committed to a mainstream movie that revolves around the dangers of a brittle superstructure.

Universal picked up the movie after Mike Sobel, a relative newcomer to scripting, pitched them the idea. Neal Moritz will produce through his Original Films banner.
