The Umbrella Academy

The mystery of which shows Netflix chooses to renew vs. those it lets quietly fade away (cough_OneDayAtATime_cough) is one that the streaming service and its all-powerful algorithm keeps to itself. But even without viewing figures released, we can guess that The Umbrella Academy has performed well enough to please the giant compu-brain to win a second season.

Adapted from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá's comicbook series, the show charts what happens after 543 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women on the same day in 1989... Women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world.

But not everything went according to plan. In their teenage years, the family fractured and the team disbanded. Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing. Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Vanya (Ellen Page) and Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death. Yet the estranged family once again begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

With Steve Blackman back as showrunner, much of the cast will also be returning along with some new additions to be announced. There's no date for this one yet, but given the streaming service's usual policy, we'd expect it to return around next February.
