Well, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s much-hyped horror movie, The Cabin In The Woods, just got a whole lot more intriguing, with the news that noted character actors Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford have become the first actors to sign on as two white-collar colleagues with a connection to the eponymous scary cabin.
As you would expect, given Empire’s obsession with **The West Wing **and our love of all things Whedon, this is a marriage made in heaven. Whitford, of course, played Josh on that wonderful TV show, while Jenkins is one of the finest character actors around, and he's just had a heck of a year, with The Visitor, Step Brothers and Burn After Reading.
We’re also digging the fact that so far Whedon, who’s writing and producing, and Goddard, who’s writing and directing, haven’t gone for young, attractive teen types with massive lung capacities.
"It's really just your basic typecasting: When you need two actors to run through the woods in low-cut nighties, you immediately think of Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford," Goddard told The Hollywood Reporter, while Whedon followed up with, "They're the first proof that though 'The Cabin in the Woods' is a classic horror film, it isn't one you've seen before."
Typical Whedon self-confidence, there. We’ll be holding him to that.
As for the movie itself, little is known about it other than that it takes place in a cabin in the woods. Plot details have been shrouded in mystery, but we’re sure that all, or at least some, will be revealed in due course, although we’re expecting **Evil Dead **with snarkier dialogue.
Filming is scheduled to begin on the MGM project in the spring, with a Feb 5, 2010 release date worldwide.
