Tulip Fever gets resurrected

Tulip Takes Root Again

Tulip Fever, which was a victim of a closed tax loophole in 2004, has grown a fresh stem.

Originally planned for a shoot last year in London with Keira Knightley, Jude Law and Jim Broadbent, the first version of Tulip was to be directed by John Madden. But when the budget grew following the closure of a tax break program, co-producers DreamWorks/Miramax shut down the film.

Now it’s back on – though the director this time will be Shall We Dance’s Peter Chelsom, and Tom Stoppard’s original adaptation has been re-written by Peter Flannery.

Set in the 17th century, Deborah Moggach’s book follows a beautiful young woman who marries a wealthy merchant. When an artist arrives to paint her portrait, she falls in love and they plan for a future together by putting their money into the highly speculative tulip market, in which certain flower bulbs were worth huge sums.

No announcement has been made as to whether the original cast will return.
