After last night brought the news that the long-mooted third Tron movie had shifted into a higher gear with the attachment of director Garth Davis, the proposed leading star of the film confirmed that he is indeed going to be heading into the grid. Jared Leto has been attached to a potential Tron project since 2017, and he seemed thrilled to finally be able to confirm himself for Davis’ film in a series of celebratory social media posts.
“I am so very excited and proud to confirm that YES – I will be starring in TRON,” he wrote. “We will work as hard as we possibly can to create something that I hope you all will love. We have some very special ideas in store for you all… See you in the grid!” With reports that Davis fought passionately for his role as director, Leto also wrote about his love of Tron’s futuristic neon-infused world. “I’m struck with such gratitude for the opportunity to bring this movie to life, especially as both the original video game and the film affected me so deeply as a young child. The fact that I get to be a part of this new chapter is mind-blowing.”
As reported by Collider, Leto also apparently let slip the film’s proposed title on Twitter – before hastily deleting the post and writing the above instead. If Leto’s now-vanished post is anything to go by, the film will be called Tron: Ares – and historic reports indicate that Ares might be the name of Leto’s lead character. Yesterday’s update stressed that the film is not yet 100% officially greenlit by Disney – so when that dotted line is fully signed and the film is finally confirmed, we may find out if Ares is the proper title after all. For now, speculation continues over whether this new film will connect with the previous Tron and 2010’s Tron: Legacy, or whether it marks a total reboot.
