There are more rumblings coming from Flynn’s Arcade – after news came last month that things might be moving again on the third Tron film, more updates indicate that the series really is booting up again for another outing. A new report from Deadline states that the project is not yet officially greenlit, but that development is moving forward, ten years after Tron: Legacy hit the screen – with a director now in place.
According to the report, filmmaker Garth Davis looks set to helm the film – an interesting choice, considering his previous fare. The Australian director made 2016’s Dev Patel drama Lion, and followed it up with 2018 Bible biopic Mary Magdalene – which would make his entry to the virtual world of Tron a leap into all-new territory. But though it seems like a major change of pace, Davis apparently “aggressively pursued the job” and won over Disney execs – suggesting that he may be a big fan of the series.
While many incarnations of a proposed third Tron movie have come and gone, this one is set to star Jared Leto, who will also produce. He’s was first linked with Tron talks back in 2017, so this one has been building for a while. With it currently ambiguous whether the film will be an outright Tron and Legacy sequel or a total reboot, it’s as yet unknown whether the likes of Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde will return, or whether Jeff Bridges will be plugged in once again. The real clincher, of course, would be getting Daft Punk back to do another soundtrack after delivering an incredible score for Legacy. The latest version of the screenplay is written by Jesse Wigutow, and Legacy co-producer Justin Springer is down to co-produce once again, this time with Emma Ludbrook.
If the dotted line has not yet been formally signed, the fact that a director, producers, and star have now been attached and a screenplay exists means a new Tron is certainly gathering steam – but stay tuned for any official announcements from Disney before digging out your Light Cycle once again.
