Piggybacking on a well-established product (Troll dolls) worked out well for DreamWorks Animation back in 2016, as Trolls became a 'toon success and spawned earworm Can't Stop The Feeling. Someone clearly wants to stop most of the feeling, as Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) are back as the central pair, tasked this time with taking down a new threat to the Troll world in the first trailer for Trolls World Tour.
In an adventure that will take them well beyond what they’ve known before, Poppy and Branch discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes scattered over six different lands and devoted to six different kinds of music: Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop and Rock. Their world is about to get a lot bigger and a whole lot louder.
A member of hard-rock royalty, Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), aided by her father King Thrash (Ozzy Osbourne), wants to destroy all other kinds of music to let rock reign supreme. With the fate of the world at stake, Poppy and Branch, along with their friends – Biggie (James Corden), Chenille (Caroline Hjelt), Satin (Aino Jawo), Cooper (Ron Funches) and Guy Diamond (Kunal Nayyar) – set out to visit all the other lands to unify the Trolls in harmony against Barb, who’s looking to upstage them all.
The stage is naturally set for an embarrassment of musical voice cameos, including Mary J. Blige, George Clinton, Kelly Clarkson, Anthony Ramos, Ester Dean and conductor/violinist Gustavo Dudamel. Also popping up? The likes of Sam Rockwell, Jamie Dornan, Kenan Thompson and Flula Borg.
With Walt Dohrn, the co-director on the first film, stepping up to handle the whole thing here, Trolls World Tour will arrive on 20 March next year.
