Thanks to initially arriving in American cinemas attached to Black Swan, the trailer for Terrence Malick’s latest, The Tree Of Life, has been bootlegged faster than you can say dodgy mobile phone copy. But now it has appeared online in a format we think Malick might prefer – gorgeous high definition, courtesy of Apple.
The Tree of Life’s sprawling story follows Jack, who grows up in the 1950s and has a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). As an adult (played by Sean Penn), Jack is adrift in life, searching for answers in an unforgiving, confusing modern world.
Malick employs all manner of impressionistic imagery to convey Jack’s quest as he struggles to reconnect with his life and understand the people and world around him.
Suffice to say, if you’re thinking that Malick had decided to make a fast-moving romp loaded with jokes about bodily fluids, you probably suffered some sort of traumatic head injury before clicking on this story.
Go take in the trailer over at Apple and let us know what you think. The Tree of Life is due to arrive on May 27 in the US, but there’s no solid release date over here just yet. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.
