While Tyler Perry might have been hoping that the advertised final outing for his long-running Madea character would win him the top spot at the US box office this weekend, he reckoned without the staying power of Toothless. How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World stayed in first place, adding $30 million as it flew close to $100 million domestically, according to studio estimates.
Perry instead had to settle for a second--place launch with A Madea Family Funeral, which made $27 million. It was enough to push Alita: Battle Angel down to third on $7 million, and the sci-fi action film may have trouble crossing far past $100 million in the States, though it has a seen a significant boost elsewhere, and has already crossed $350 million worldwide.
The Lego Movie 2 slipped to fourth with $6.6 million, while Green Book boosted its screen count off the back of its Best Picture Oscar victory and leapt to fifth on $4.7 million.
At sixth was Fighting With My Family, which earned $4.69 million, while Isn't It Romantic fell to seventh on $4.64 million. New arrival Greta stumbled badly, as Neil Jordan's thriller faced negative reviews and seemingly little audience engagement, earning a low $4.5 million in eighth. What Men Want fell to ninth with $2.7 million and Happy Death Day 2U wraps up the top 10 on $2.5 million.
