MTV used the occasion of its own Movie Awards over the weekend to debut the trailer for its new Scream TV series. Bella Thorne has a bad night in a swimming pool, suggesting she isn't in the show for long, and Willa Fitzgerald, Amy Forsyth, John Karna, Carlson Young and Amadeus Serafini fill out the rest of the cast.
"You can't do a slasher movie as a TV series," the trailer tells us outright, setting out the show's stall as continuing the franchise's genre self-awareness. It looks as if there'll be plenty of teen soap opera around the murderous antics, but the plot synopsis we have so far gives us a YouTube video going viral, leading to problems for a new generation of Lakewood high-schoolers and serving as "the catalyst for a murder that opens up a window to the town's troubled past", as documented in Screams 1-4.
Jamie Travis (Finding Carter, Faking It) directed the pilot, and Wes Craven and the Weinsteins are among the executive producers (sadly there's no sign of original writer Kevin Williamson).
Scream's first season of ten episodes gets underway on MTV on June 30.
