The pick of the bunch in films to look forward to…

Yes, it's a slow news day, but that doesn't mean that good news isn't out there. There's always good trailers to be found (granted, among a good portion of bad ones), and there's been a burst of them recently, as we drift back towards the Oscar end of the year. We'll cap off the pick of this week's bunch with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the latest effort from Empire's king of the one liners, Shane Black. Of course, our own Chris Hewitt has already seen it, and it seems the jammy sod was right on the money with his raving, and the waving of the arms, and the exclamations of the joy. Strangely, what we like best isn't just a top performance from Robert Downey Jr. (you'd pretty much expect Black's words coming out of his mouth to be a win-win situation), but a thundering return to form for Val Kilmer. We haven't seen him this human since Tombstone, and this funny since Top Secret - and he's the straight guy! Click here to take a look. Next up is Everything Is Illuminated. We've been waiting for this since Liev Schreiber talked to us about it at last year's London Film Festival. Now he's a very clever fellow, is Mr S, and judging from what we see in this trailer for his debut behind the camera, he's invested every ounce of his intellect, time and care into making this a storming start out of the directing blocks. It already looks like Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination material, and possibly more. Elijah Wood continues to stretch his acting muscles, and possibly strain his eyes. In this age where dumb is still highly profitable and possibly too frequently on screens, this rather more talk-oriented comedy is looking mighty appealing. Uma Thurman, as usual, looks gorgeous as the approaching-middle-age business woman who'd never had time for a guy until now. Meryl Streep
