Since moving from the long stretch of development hell, with most of us wondering if it would ever actually get made, the Top Gun sequel has been jumping off the deck and shoving into overdrive. Details have been falling into place, and we now know the film, Top Gun: Maverick, is targeting a July 2019 release.

With both a title and a confirmed director (Oblivion's Joseph Kosinski is reuniting with star Tom Cruise), the sequel to the 1986 film finds Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell teaching young hotshot pilots how to do their thing in an age where unmanned drone warfare is becoming increasingly common.

We don't yet know if any of his Top Gun cast colleagues will come back for this (Val Kilmer has said he'd be ready to defrost Iceman for the movie), but you never knows... Except Goose, of course. Poor Goose.

The script for the movie has been through the hands of Peter Craig, Justin Marks, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz and the current aim – Stateside at least – is to have it landing on 12 July 2019.
