He's long been attached as director to a developing project called Eerie, PA, but** Final Destination** and Candyman star Tony Todd will finally make his debut behind the camera with **Catalytic. In true renaissance man fashion, he's also written the screenplay.
Catalytic's set-up is clearly the result of a good time being had by all on Sushi Girl, in which Todd co-stars with Mark Hamill, Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, Danny Trejo and Sonny Chibah, and which he confided to Empire recently is "the best work of my life". Sushi Girl comes courtesy of Assembly Line pictures, and its producer roster of Destin Pfaff, Neal Fischer, Kern Saxton and Suren M Seron will also be behind Catalytic. The blurb so far is that the film "follows a magician as he embarks on a road trip during an impending supernatural apocalypse."
The news of Todd's impending new career comes only a day after Hatchet director Adam Green teased a mystery helmer for Hatchet 3. Speaking at FrightFest, Green "revealed" that the debut director had been "part of the Hatchet family the whole way" and "works on a lot of big movies", leading to some speculation that Todd (who played flambouyant charlatan Reverend Zombie in Hatchets 1 and 2) was his man.* Today's Catalytic announcement would seem to mean that Todd will be otherwise engaged, unless it's a trial run and he's intending to do both...
There's no announced start-date for Catalytic yet, but the project is currently casting, which suggests it'll get going soon. Hatchet 3, with or without Todd, is expected to start shooting in February.
*Others placed their bets on Kane Hodder.
