What is it, Tony Scott Month? We’re starting to think that the director has paid to make sure his name is linked to every other movie news story right now. The latest word on Scott’s actions is that over the weekend, he became attached to direct an adaptation Mark Millar’s graphic novel, Nemesis.
Created by Kick-Ass writer Millar and Steven McNiven, the story is another twisty shift on superhero troops, this time tweaking the Batman-esque tale of a man whose parents die. The slight difference is that Matt Anderson is a billionaire tycoon and genius, but he’s also a villain, just like his mum and dad before him.
So he doesn’t pour his resources into fighting crime; he flies around the world knocking off respected senior police officers and carries out his biggest plan in Washington DC, where he terrorises Blake Morrow, the boss cop who captured his parents.
20th Century Fox has picked up the rights, and will co-produce with Scott Free, which Tony runs with brother Sir Ridley. There’s no writer attached, yet, but we wonder if Fox would want Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman to take a crack since they worked so well with Millar’s words on Kick-Ass. Though Vaughn in particular is a little bit busy with X-Men: First Class right now and seems to think superhero movies are doomed anyway.
And given the vastly different box office returns for the two movies based on Millar’s work, we’re sure that Fox is hoping that any eventual Nemesis pic will hew closer to Wanted than** Kick-Ass**’ eventual earning power.
Scott, meanwhile, still has a busy schedule of films to choose from, with Potzdamer Platz, Hell’s Angels, and more recently, **The Associate, all scratching at his door like stray dogs.
