**Tomorrowland **(full UK title Tomorrowland: A World Beyond) might tempt us with the idea of a bright future, but the box-office prospects for Disney’s prestige adventure project aren’t exactly rosy. And that’s despite taking the top spot at the US box office on a Memorial Day weekend that the business might soon want to forget.
According to studio estimates, Brad Bird’s latest made $41.7 million across the four days, which is below the hoped-for $50 million target. And given the reported $180 million budget, that’s an awful lot of money to make back, especially since its international performance was equally low. Here’s hoping it doesn’t scare the studios from trying other original ideas and retreating instead behind sequels and reboots.
Talking of sequels, Pitch Perfect 2 continued to be successful, making $38.5 million in second across the extended weekend for a US domestic total of $127 million. Mad Max: Fury Road also held on well, dropping just 45 per cent in earnings for a third place finish and $32.1 million. It has a combined international take of $219.8 million, which is solid, though it’ll still have to race to make back its budget plus all the marketing costs.
In fourth, Avengers: Age Of Ultron crossed another milestone as it took in $27.8 million, which means it has passed $400 million in the States and is up to more than $1.1 billion globally. The Poltergeist remake only managed to scare up a fifth place launch, making $26.5 million. But with a relatively thrifty $35 million budget, that’s still a relatively strong start.
Buddy comedy** Hot Pursuit **was down to sixth with $4.5 million, while Fast And Furious 7, despite spending 8 weeks on the charts, still managed $2.7 million in seventh for a $347.6 million US total so far. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 was eighth, earning $2.5 million, while DreamWorks Animation’s Home was ninth with $2.4 million. And falling to tenth was The Age Of Adaline, which took in $1.9 million across the four days.
