Joe Wright has already lured recent Oscar-scorer Casey Affleck for the lead of his next film, Stoner. And now he's adding someone who won a golden baldie a while ago – Tommy Lee Jones is joining the cast.

Stoner finds adapting John Williams' novel, which follows the life of William Stoner (Affleck), a poor farmer who becomes an academic, emerging as an unlikely hero while navigating the first half of the 20th Century. We don't yet know what Jones will be doing in the film, though we can guess at a scowl or seven. Williams' book is one of those rare tomes that didn't strike the public interest when it was originally published in 1965, but became known as a classic when it was reissued in 2003.

Andrew Bovell wrote the script, which Wright is making as his follow-up to Darkest Hour, which itself is already the subject of Oscar buzz, at least for Gary Oldman's performance as Winston Churchill.

Jones has George Bush-era comedy Shock And Awe headed to screens alongside Just Getting Started, which is out on 1 December. And he's been filming sci-fi pic Ad Astra alongside Brad Pitt.
