It might not sound like the most surprising revelation given how franchise-happy studios like to be. But to hear it from the mouth of the actor – in this case, Tom Hardy – gives the news that much more weight. So, yes... He’s signed for more than one **Mad Max **film after this year’s **Fury Road.
“I’ve never been more excited and out of my comfort zone.” Hardy tells Esquire about** Fury Road**, which George Miller is finally wrangling to the screen after years of setbacks and problems. Hardy says that he’s actually attached for three films, but cautions that we’ll have to wait and see how the first performs before the budget is granted for further adventures. “Everything’s based on figures and how things are perceived,” he says. “Inevitably it’s a business.”
And, as you may already known from our cover story on the film a couple of issues back, it was not an easy task to make the movie. “We were in the middle of nowhere,” Hardy tells Esquire, “so far away from the studio system that Warner Bros. can’t really see what’s going on, and just getting things to and from the set was a nightmare. We’d lose half a vehicle in sand and have to dig it out. It was just this unit in the middle of x-million square-kilometres of desert, and then this group of lunatics in leathers, like a really weird S&M party, or a Hell’s Angels convention. It was like Cirque du Soleil meets fucking Slipknot.”
With Charlize Theron, Zoë Kravitz, Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Megan Gale, Hugh Keays-Byrne and Josh Helman all in the cast, Mad Max: Fury Road is** **in UK cinemas from May 14.
