We’ll be honest, this isn’t what we expected of the first video from the long-awaited Top Gun sequel. But Tom Cruise in his fighter pilot duds, along with his Mission: Impossible – Fallout director and Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Christopher McQuarrie, have an important message for you about the worst setting on your TV and how to turn it off – a message which they filmed on the new Top Gun set.
As Fallout hits Blu-ray and DVD this week, the pair have released a short clip warning about the ‘motion smoothing’ interpolation setting that tends to be automatically activated on lots of HD TVs. “We’re talking to you from the set of Top Gun: Maverick,” says Cruise before McQuarrie chimes in: “We’re very proud to present Mission: Impossible – Fallout and we want you to enjoy it to the fullest possible effect, just as you would in a theatre.” The pair go on to explain motion smoothing, and suggest Googling a way to turn it off – watch the video on Cruise’s Twitter here, or below:
The motion smoothing TV setting aims to sharpen images by inserting addition frames to reduce motion blur – and while that might sound good, what it actually results in is a soap-opera-looking effect with images that appear to be slightly sped-up or distractingly televisual. Here’s a handy side-by-side comparison using one of Drive’s car chases as an example:
If you’ve picked up a copy of Fallout – which placed very highly on our Best Movies Of 2018 list – to watch at home, know that if you’ve turned off motion smoothing you’ll be making Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie very happy. In the meantime, the pair will be busy on Maverick’s production – here’s everything we know about the Top Gun sequel so far.
