Finally scoring the chance to realise his plans to make a new movie adaptation of his Spawn comicbook character, creator Todd McFarlane has been speaking out about the tone. And from the sounds of it, he's not looking for sunshine, rainbows and puppies.
"There’s no joy," McFarlane has told Nerdist about the film, which represents his directorial debut. "There’s gonna be no fun lines in it, and it’s just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway. There’s not a lot of funny in them. And that seems to be a weird hurdle for a lot of people in this city to get over because they sort of go into a superhero/Avengers default all the time."
Given that the new Spawn, which will star Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner, draws from McFarlane's tale of a black ops CIA Agent who dies, makes a deal with the devil, is shortchanged and comes back as a soul-hunting hellspawn, we weren't expecting it to be filled with much in the way of laughs, no matter how much the 1997 movie tried (and largely failed) to cram them in. Still, there's plenty of room for diversity in the genre, and potshots at the most successful iteration are hardly warranted.
With the Blumhouse team providing the backing, Spawn should be out this year, but has yet to confirm an official date.
