Though it looked like Andrew Scott's Moriarty (did you miss him?) might end up returning full time for Sherlock's fourth series, Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes and Martin Freeman's Watson will in fact be facing another from their considerable rogues' gallery, brought to life by Toby Jones.
With the cameras now rolling on the long-awaited latest series, the Beeb shared the news, with Jones commenting, "I'm excited and intrigued by the character I shall be playing in Sherlock..." and co-creator Steven Moffat adding, "Delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of Doyle's finest villains."
No details have been released about exactly who Jones will be, but he's a great addition to the cast. Series Four finds Holmes back in the UK (and hopefully not still exploring his mind palace), facing new threats even as Watson and Mary (Amanda Abbington) prepare to become parents. Sherlock as a godfather... The mind boggles. No date has been announced, but we'd expect the show to return early next year.
