He’s been most recently known as the sadistic Black Jack on US cable drama Outlander, but Tobias Menzies is headed back to the big screen. He’s scored a role in the new Underworld franchise entry.
The film, which doesn’t yet have an official title, sees the return of Kate Beckinsale’s cat-suited vampire warrior Selene, weaving in elements of the younger generation, including Theo James as David, returning from 2012’s Underworld Awakening. Cory Goodman has been at work on the script, which is aimed at expanding the Underworld universe.
And the movie will reunite Menzies with director Anna Foerster, who called the shots on the controversial Outlander finale. His schedule for future work on the show has been tweaked so he can shoot the film and the series at roughly the same time. For the new Underworld, Menzies will be Marius, a mysterious new leader among the werewolf Lycans.
Last seen in Black Sea, Menzies will continue to hop between TV and movies, having worked on The Night Manager with Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, plus Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan’s comedy series Catastrophe.
