Tim Burton To Make Sleeping Beauty?

File this firmly under "rumour" for the moment, but Harry over at AICN is claiming that Tim Burton may direct **Maleficent, a twist on Disney's classic Sleeping Beauty. But this time, as you may have guessed from the title, we see things through the eyes of the villainess.

The original film is one of Disney's very best, with gorgeous animation by artist Eyvind Earle and that fabulous baddie in Maleficent herself, with a voice like an angel and a penchant for dastardly deeds. In comparison, Aurora herself was a bit wet, frankly, so to an extent we can get behind the focus on Maleficent. And of course Burton started his career in Disney Animation, which practically guarantees a great love and respect for the original.

The only problem, however, is that Maleficent's a really unsympathetic baddie. Remember, she curses an infant to death because she wasn't invited to a party (which is a teensy tad disproportionate) and then spends 16 years making sure that death happens. It'll take a serious Wicked-style rewrite to make this lady seem relatable.

And can Sleeping Beauty look as, well, beautiful in live action? If anyone can do it, Burton can (and his missus, Helena Bonham Carter, could be rather wonderful in the bad title role, even if we will miss Eleanor Audley's sonorous voice) - but should it be done? Speculate wildly below!
