Given their successful track record, Phil Lord and Chris Miller can naturally round up great casts for their projects. And their latest, Apple TV+-based murder-mystery comedy series The Afterparty, has a doozy.Tiffany Haddish, Ben Schwartz, Dave Franco, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ilana Glazer, Ike Barinholtz, Jamie Demetriou and John Early will all star in the show.
Miller cooked this one up, crafting an eight-episode series set at a high school reunion party that follows the events of the same night from different characters' perspective. Each episode will have its own visual format and genre to match the personality of the storyteller.
Haddish will play Detective Danner, the eccentric detective assigned to solve the high-profile case, with Early as Culp, her over-eager partner. Richardson is Aniq, a loveable escape room designer who hopes to reconnect with his high school crush, Zoe (Chao), a former artist turned school administrator who is newly separated from her high school sweetheart.
Schwartz is on to be Yasper, Aniq’s relentlessly positive best friend who dreams of a career in music, while Barinholtz is Brett, Zoe’s ex-husband, an arrogant, former high school athlete. Glazer's taking the role of Chelsea, the former high school valedictorian and class president, with Franco as Xavier, once a dorky high school drama student, now a famous pop star and actor. Finally, there's Demetriou's Walt, who was ignored throughout high school and attends the reunion with hopes to be remembered.
Apple will no doubt be hoping this continues the winning streak begun by Ted Lasso, which has already been renewed for a third season before the second has been filmed.
