The BAFTA Awards – hosted this year by Joanna Lumley and full of talk of both #MeToo and #TimesUp – happened on Sunday evening at the Royal Albert Hall. Most of the awards went to the expected winners, with The Shape Of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Coco amongst those going home with trophies.
With Cirque Du Soleil providing interpretive dance for each of the main film nominees, it was a lively, if unsurprising evening. Guillermo del Toro took home Best Director Though some had thought Sally Hawkins might nab a BAFTA for Water, Three Billboards' Frances McDormand added another award to her collection. Billboards also went home with Best British Film (despite its American setting and cast, its creative team and UK-based production companies meant it qualified), Best Original Screenplay for writer/director Martin McDonagh, Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell and the overall Best Film prize.
Darkest Hour leading man Gary Oldman's march through the awards continued with a Best Actor win, while Allison Janney landed another trophy home for her supporting turn in I,Tonya.
Elsewhere, there was a pleasing mix of gongs, with Blade Runner 2049 cinematographer Roger Deakins rewarded for his work (Oscars, are you listening?) and Baby Driver taking Best Editing. And finally, Daniel Kaluuya, who is seeing a big boost in his career of late, scored the EE Rising Star Award, the one category voted for by the public.
