Given the turbulent events of the last year, with the fallout of the Harvey Weinstein scandal still still ongoing, it's perhaps not surprising that this year's Golden Globes ceremony was dominated by talk of the need to change the Hollywood (and world) culture for the better and a celebration of women on film and TV. With the attendees all dressed in black, it was a charged atmosphere: a peculiar example of Hollywood admonishing and celebrating itself at the same time.
Host Seth Meyers immediately addressed the situation in his opening remarks, welcoming "Ladies and remaining gentlemen," whilst Natalie Portman went off-script while presenting the Best Director award to point out that the shortlist was all male. Emma Watson, Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams all brought activists as their plus-ones. Salma Hayek and Ashley Judd – both high-profile accusers of Weinstein – accompanied each other.
The hardest-hitting statement of the evening, however, came from Oprah Winfrey, who called on "all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon!" She continued, "When that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight... fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say 'Me too' again." Her words (referencing the #MeToo hashtag, which went viral in the immediate Weinstein aftermath) met with a standing ovation.
On the actual awards front, the big winner this year was Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
The caustically funny drama notched up the Best Drama gong, plus wins for screenplay, star Frances McDormand and supporting actor Sam Rockwell. Elsewhere, Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird also did well (despite Gerwig herself losing out on a Best Director nomination in a male-centric category), as Saoirse Ronan won Best Actress, Musical Or Comedy, and the film took home the trophy in its category. Guillermo del Toro was named Best Director for The Shape Of Water and Gary Oldman continued to win awards for Darkest Hour.
In the TV section, The Handmaid's Tale predictably dominated the drama category, while Big Little Lies also won some more awards. Check out the full winners' list below.
