Update! Along with Thewlis, Tilda Swinton and Moonrise Kingdom’s Lucas Hedges are also now confirmed as aboard. Looks like Gilliam’s gathering a great, indie-flavoured cast to bring this one to life. More news as we get it...

Things are moving healthily apace on Terry Gilliam’s latest dip into surreal, dramatic sci-fi, The Zero Theorem. The director has been building his cast, with David Thewlis just confirmed as playing a crucial role.

After spotting a mention of Thewlis on the website of Theorem’s backers Voltage Pictures, the team at The Playlist nabbed word that he’s definitely involved.

Christoph Waltz is still set to star as a reclusive computer genius who lives inside a burnt-out old chapel. He’s been slaving away on a project aimed at discovering the purpose of existence – or lack thereof – while also discovering something about himself.

It’s set in a world controlled by a shadowy figure called Management, one that our hero has long since retreated from. But he’s tempted to re-engage with the outside thanks to Bainsley (Melanie Thierry), who offers passion he’s rarely experienced and the teenaged son of the mysterious ruler, who seems ready to help him out.

Gilliam, working from Pat Rushin’s script, is getting set to direct the movie in Bucharest next month. He’s even posted a first look at the main set, under construction in the studio, on Facebook. Check that out below.
