If you saw and loved Joanna Hogg's intimate, dramatic, thoughtful 2019 film The Souvenir, you'll likely already know that she had been working on the follow-up, which continues the semi-autobiographical story of filmmaker Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne). Now we have a trailer for the film.
The Souvenir Part II picks up Julie's story as she attempts to filter her grief into a graduation short about her dead, older lover, only to find herself stifled and unstuck. It's not easy to figure out how to creatively interpret something you still haven't emotionally processed.
It looks like another tour-de-force for Byrne, bouncing off of the likes of Tilda Swinton (her real-life mother) as her mum and Richard Ayoade's egomaniacal, would-be auteur.
With Jaygann Ayeh, Ariane Labed, James Spencer Ashworth, Harris Dickinson, Charlie Heaton, and Joe Alwyn also in the cast, The Souvenir Part II will be in US cinemas on 29 October, while UK audiences will have to wait until 21 January next year.
