As anyone who’s picked up Empire’s world exclusive The Irishman issue will know, Martin Scorsese’s new crime epic takes place over the course of several decades – and Robert De Niro, in its central role, will play as young as 24 years old thanks to newfangled de-ageing effects. The film’s latest trailer shows the extent of those effects in action, revealing plenty of fresh footage of a much younger, much older, and in-between De Niro, playing mob hitman Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran.
This new trailer is the most energetic look at Scorsese’s latest yet – showing a bit more of the pace and energy you’d typically associate with the master filmmaker. Beyond that, there are more hints of how the film is interweaved through American history – from the World War II to the assassination of JFK – more of Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa, Joe Pesci as Russell Bufalino, and our best look yet at Harvey Keitel as Angelo Bruno. It really is one hell of a cast. Expect debate to rage online about how successful or not the de-ageing technology is – and if you want to find out more about the making of the film, be sure to pick up Empire’s October 2019 issue, featuring the first interviews anywhere about the movie.
